To be competitive in the PC industry, we developed Dream PC, a concept that challenged us to achieve the thinnest clamshell PC. We have looked at every possibility from component part selection and layout to hinge mechanisms to reduce the thickness and weight. The total thickness was under 11mm. The tablet is securely attached but also easily pulled off with one hand, and can be re-attached in a reversed position to become a higher performance tablet. We developed a wireless sensor system to monitor the activities of senior adults in their homes. I was responsible for the design and production of all sensor enclosures for an important pilot study. I designed the electronic packaging for my departments sensor based projects. Most applications have strict engineering requirements to meet, such as enclosures that must be constructed from no more than 2 plastic parts, must have easy access to change batteries, multiple enclosure mounting requirements along with easy installation, and provide sensor PCB and battery pack locations that maximize the PIR performance. We attempted to include all possible features in the system since we utilize the system for HW validation and SW development to showcase the CPU’s capability and test all usage models. It resulted in a very thick and heavy system. 1. Conflicted expectation - The system is thick and heavy. However, it’s expected to look thin and sleek as a future system. 2. Tipping issue - The tablet is heavy. Once it’s docked on the base, it tips over when opened. 3. Frequent feature change - Depending on the CPU development, the requirement and specification is added or changed. Starting with “Physics” Soon after we had all features included in the system, we discovered the tipping problem. With the engineering assessment, the tablet would weigh 1020g with a 12mm thickness and a base weighing 620g with a 8mm thickness.
